Recall Information

Colorado law provides a mechanism for voters to remove certain state and local officials from office before their term expires. This process, known as a recall, applies to a wide range of positions including the Governor, Attorney General, and members of various state boards. However, it's important to note that federal officials like U.S. Senators and Representatives are exempt from this process.

To begin a recall, citizens must first create a petition and have it approved by the appropriate authority. For state-level officials, this is the Secretary of State's Office, while county-level recalls require approval from the local clerk and recorder.

Timing is crucial in the recall process. Most officials are protected from recall attempts during their first six months in office. An exception exists for General Assembly members, who may face a recall just five days into the legislative session. Additionally, recalls are not permitted within the last six months of an official's term.
